Ikea's Response

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We do apologize for any
inconvenience that you may have experienced.

We would recommend taking the item to your local Home Improvement
Center
to speak a hardware specialist. They will be able to recommend
the appropriate hardware to use for the shelf.

Thank you for your interest in IKEA. We do appreciate your inquiry.

In my opinion, this is not good customer service. Just because I've already bought the item does not mean their service to me ends there. Nor does it mean I'm no longer a customer worthy of service. I spent and spend a lot of money in their store. This feels very much like a "You bought it, and now we're done so deal with it yourself" brush off. It frustrates me to no end that it's difficult to get good, caring customer service from such large entities. Because really, that's mostly what we have anymore - especially if you live in an urban area. And if I take this "item" to my "local Home Improvement Center," you know what's likely to happen? If I find someone to help me at all, I'll be lucky if it's someone with any expertise in this area. I have not had much luck with this in the past. Their customer service is not much better than what I'm experiencing here.

This is one time when I wish my blog was more popular so someone from Ikea could see it that would understand brushing off your customers is not a good plan. I'm just bummed about the holes in my wall and all the money spent trying to figure out a hardware option that will work. blah.

That was our experience with IKEA last time when we were missing a screw. They said we could either drive it the hour back to the store; they could mail it to us, but it would take over two weeks; or we could go to the hardware store. So pissed that their mistake isn't quickly remedied by them, but expects the customer to clean up their errors.

Yeah, that is pretty ridiculous. I am not pleased.

Oh man would that ever piss me off. Sorry it has turned into such a hassle.

I actually agree with IKEA on this one. They sold you a shelf - not a shelf installation kit.

The problem is that they sell you the shelf that you cannot really get your hands on before it's yours and assembled. You have no idea how heavy it's going to be, nor how they have it set up to hang. Other shelves we've gotten from Ikea HAVE included installation means, and they were much lighter. Doesn't make much sense. Furthermore, when I wrote to them, I didn't ask for a refund or anything. All I asked for was suggestions on hanging it and to say that I thought perhaps they should rethink a bit how they packaged and promoted this item. That was the response I got. The brush off just pisses me off. You can handle customer service in a much better manner. We're spending a lot of money and effort on figuring out a solution to this ya know?

Plus.. this shelf cost more than usual, and they sure spend a lot of time and effort and give you lots of hardware to bolt your FURNITURE to the wall.. I guess I thought a heavy shelf that could easily FALL on people would be similar.

Our bedroom furniture is from Ikea and after one year with it we aren't pleased at all. My dad is from Sweden and he raves and raves about the quality of the things from Ikea but I don't see it in the stuff they have in the US stores. My dresser drawers fall out and one of our nightstands keeps falling apart!

Good to know Christina. We generally stick with shelves and stuff because of that worry. I'm glad you brought it up.
