OK, OK... I know. You can't judge a book by its cover. So let's discuss my conflicting thoughts on your practice. When I first called you, you were a bit snippy with me until you realized I was a potential patient. I understood, seeing as you were in the midst of a therapy session at the time. But should you really be answering your cell during a session? Again, I haven't experienced therapy, so I don't know.
When I arrived at your office on the dot for the time on which we had agreed, you were not there, and it was locked. I wandered around for a few minutes before going back to the car to look for your number since no one else was in the whole building either. When I got to my car, my cell rang and you said, "Barb, were you going to keep your appointment?" in a snippy tone. When I explained that you weren't there, you became all nicey again. By the time we started, it was 10 or 15 minutes late (and you didn't take that into account for our time frame.)
You seemed nice enough. But you did interrupt me to take a call from your daughter. Again, I don't know if this is ok to do or not. You started off by telling me that therapy is your part time job, and that you have counseled 4 other women with IF - all 4 with PCOS. You also went on to tell me about every single person you know with PCOS (including your daughter) and what their outcome was - emphasizing the ones who got pregnant. When I mentioned that I was there to try to let go of my need to experience pregnancy so that I could more fully embrace adoption, you promptly broke out the assvice. The first was the classic, "So and so tried for years and years, and when she let go and signed the adoption papers, she fell pregnant. It was only after she let go that it happened." (Insert "relaxed" for let go). When I explained that I don't like to think about adoption as a means to pregnancy, you did a 180 again and completely agreed. But that assvice was still tucked in your back pocket, ready for use as later you mentioned that we don't know what God has in store for us, and perhaps I should accept his wisdom. I get that. I really do. But are you supposed to mention God in your first therapy session before you know what my beliefs are? Again, I'm the newbie here, so you tell me.
You went on to say that I was very informed, and had a good handle on most of it myself already, and that I needed to tell you what I really wanted help with. I explained again my difficulty with letting go of the need to experience pregnancy, combine our DNA, etc You agreed, but made sure to quiz me on what tests were needed for PCOS, what levels were acceptable for TSH, and what meds can help so that you could write it down to tell your daughter. I don't mind that at all since I love to help people, but maybe you could have done that when I wasn't on the clock, after our session?
You seem to care, and you seem nice, but I just don't know what to think. You also say you place children in foster care, but some things you said didn't seem to jive with what I've learned about the Florida state system. Maybe I had the wrong facts? If you do have an in with the system, I could learn a lot from you. That would be cool.
I'm just really confused. I don't know how a therapist is really supposed to conduct themselves, and I am definitely up and down on what I think of you. I DO know that you definitely need to learn more about how IF affects people and what treatment would help. But can you help me despite that fact? I don't know. Am I being too critical? Too controlling? I've been guilty of that in the past. Should I try one more session with you to give it another go? Or should I just save my limited number of sessions in insurance and go for another therapist?
And I really don't know if I liked hugging you. I'm a huggy person, but you're a stranger. I'm so conflicted.
Sincerely,
FCIF

On a serious note - can anyone who's had therapy inform me on any of this stuff? Does this sound like the norm to you? I already don't think I like her that much, but I don't want to be making a decision on it hastily. Any help is much appreciated. xoxoxo

I have never had a therapy session but I think I would be a little concerned. I wouldn't worry so much about the paint and stuff. I would want to know what the procedure is when you get there and the door is locked again. Or the fact this person seemed more interested in helping her daughter's medical condition than your emotional one. Deciding not to parent a biological child should have been addressed more than a fly by night comment about pregnancy occurring after the adoption papers are signed. Especially since that is the whole reason you went there in the first place. She may not need to know ALL of the ins and outs of IF because there are many but if she addressed the issue at hand she might see that you are trying to get past not being able to have a biological child when you move forward with your adoption process. Plus taking other calls while talking to you is unprofessional unless an extreme emergency. Did she give you time for being on the phone at the end of the session? Barb you might want to think about moving on. Sorry.
I also have never seen a therapist, but I agree that this one sounds unprofessional. Sounds like you lost out on a lot of "your" time to time for the therapist (being late, on the phone, talking about daughter). Sounds like a waste of your time and your precious insurance coverage. I hope that whatever you decide, to go back or to find someone else, that you can really get the help you're looking for!
Run. Run away now.
I've been to one therapist. She was a quack, but was professional. She would never have answered a call, ***betrayed doctor patient confidentiality***, been late, scolded me, talked so much about her self or her daughter. (the getting PCOS info for her daughter pisses me off. You should have referred her to Dr. Google). My therapist did give some assvice that offended me(you can always adopt--there are even white babies out there!), which is why I stopped seeing her.
Overall, it sounds like she is a bad fit for you. She isn't listening to who you are and what you need to work through. She's getting stuck on the nuts and bolts of your disorder, but not paying attention to your emotional needs (and isn't that why you're there??). She is the CLASSIC EXAMPLE of a person who doesn't understand at all, but thinks they do. They're the worst.
When you leave a therapy session, you should feel like you worked through some stuff and that you have some things to think about. Here it sounds like you're only left to think about if she is the right person for you. And face it, she's just not that into you.
Find another therapist. You'll be much happier with someone who can really listen to you. Male, female, with IF experience or not....doesn't matter. You just need someone to listen and to ask the right questions to challenge you.
There is a counceling service available through my and Mr. JB's work...does such a thing exist at yours?
i have been to therapy, and will say this:
#1 under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should she have answered the phone while you are there. that is a bit NO NO!
#2 under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should she compare you to others. my last therapist did this on the IF front, and i fired her. read this to see if this was similar enough to your experience: http://journeytojunior.blogspot.com/2007/09/rhetorical-question.html
#3 she should NOT talk about her family members or insinuate in any way that she is communicating anything about your session to other people, even if your identity is not disclosed.
#4 there should be NO MENTION of god before finding our YOUR belief system
how did you find this woman? honestly, i would run away FAST. there are many wonderful therapists out there for you to choose from - one that is focused on YOU and ONLY YOU. maybe contact your closest resolve chapter to find someone who specializes in IF? plus, she will NOT be the only therapist who has her hands in the florida state foster system. you don't have to put up with this b.s. to learn more about it.
i have the creeps after reading what you wrote. yuck, hon. you deserve only the best. don't compromise. xoxox
Kathy - Thank you SO much for your insightful advice. Very well said and helpful.
Seussgirl - Same goes for you. THANKS!
Katarina - My work does have something like that, but it didn't seem extensive enough for what I was looking for. Doesn't hurt to check it out though. Thanks for the advice!
Jr. - Thanks for your point blank assessment! It's great to see it that clearly because I get so confused with just myself going round and round in my head. You know how it is.
Thanks to all! It's just such a clearer picture to see when someone else agrees or points out the problems.
OH.. and my insurance company gave me her name. sigh. All the people I know who are reputable and people have suggested aren't covered under my insurance. (they're probably too damn cheap to cover the good ones)
The Resolve idea was a good one! I'll do that!
i thinkj my opinion would be the same consensus. I have done therapy for many yrs nad it never went like that at all - i have never hugged any of my counselors ever. My sister has a master is psychology and this is not her mode of operation at all. I am wil KJBeana - RUN - that is no way to conduct therapy at all!
Yeah, I think you went to a moron. The fact that he answered the phone rudely and during someone else's session should have been the first indication. I don't think you should go back to this person. The fact that they tried to feed you all the BS people do who don't have problems getting pg is another big red flag. A therapist should know better what to say and what not to say. Canned "advice" is never good from someone in that capacity. Everyone you encounter who has never been what you've been through could offer you that same "advice" for free. Its impersonal and inconsiderate.
The other thing that would cheese me is the personal calls during your session. NOT cool! That happened to me once, and I never referred the guy to anyone else.
Don't waste your time going back to this person. You need to find someone who can really help you sort through your feelings and not their own.
This is not normal.
Ditch this 'counselor' and get yourself someone who's not going to hand out assvice. This guy sounds like he's read a lot of books, and perhaps watched Dr Phil a few times, before setting up the office.
DITCH DITCH DITCH
Do not waste money on another visit.
I agree...it's time to find someone who will help you. This quack got her license from a cracker jack box I swear! So not normal!
I hope you find someone who is there for you hun! :D
Wow. She sounds absolutely terrible. I have had plenty of counselling in my time and even the therapists I've hated were never this unprofessional.
I'm sorry you've had a strike.
But please don't go back to her. She's a good example of a terrible therapist and is why therapists have such a bad name.
Surely not every cheap therapist covered by your insurance could be this bad????
xox
very inappropriate for so many reasons!
she shouldn't quit her day job.
find someone else to talk to. normally i would say, give them a 2nd chance, you know, the benefit of the doubt... but she's already been given so many 2nd chances and has struck out over & over again in one session.
I agree with everyone, there is no excuse for such bad behavior. She obviously has little experience with infertility/adoption is she is handing out assvice so liberally.
I'd run in the other direction. I hope you can find a legit therapist that is covered by your insurance. Good luck.
I was thinking that the work counceling might offer some other referrals...ours is local, so that's handy. And it's free, so it's a good place to start, even though it won't do everything you need it to.
But I think everyone who has posted here is reasonable and rational...and the consensus is there.
Ugh, don't go back for sure! I read through everyone else's comments and I echo all of them. Completely unprofessional. I think you'd be well served by a full time therapist who doesn't answer phone calls from their kids. Ugh.
Barb, you can find updates here at:

The link is also in my About page on B&M :)
That all sounds too sketchy. Answering a phone. Offering assvice? Run. Run away now.
No therapist should make you feel that way. You'll know when you get it right. And I can tell you that the one you saw is NOT right!
(lol. I just saw kjb said "run. run away now." too!)
Run. Far away. Now.
