Let's Talk About Milk

1. E is has been less interested in milk for a little while now. He's still gung ho at night and first thing in the AM, but during the day, he nurses very little compared to what he used to, and I don't think it's all the fattier milk thing. Anyone have any input? Does he want more solids? Is this normal?

2. When in the bottle, the fat in my milk has been migrating up the sides to the tippy top in a very short period. It's annoying and hard to get it off without heating it up. Why is it doing this? It never did before. Breast milk is fascinating I tell ya.

3. Now that he's eating more solids and less milk, does he need any water?

4. Speaking of all this milk stuff, I may just move to eating unleavened bread, I hate yeast so much. I had a second bout of thrush - nowhere near as bad as the first or as other people get it, but I'm done now thank you.

5. Some tips for thrush: Don't let it go! Get it treated right away! If you're writhing from the itchy/needle pain of it, it's thrush. Don't bother with topical treatments. Go for the big guns. If it's on the surface, it's under the surface. At least that's how I feel about it. And be careful about keeping the girls cooped up and sweaty. Fat chance for me working outside in Fl. Sigh.

He doesn't need water unless you want to give him an ounce or so in a sippy cup to fool around with. It is normal to decrease the amount of milk when not in a growth spurt or maybe it's just from the heat. They know what they need. Now if only they come with instruction manuals. Sorry about the thrush.

Offer water with meals, but don't be surprised if he doesn't really drink it, just plays with it. And we started with a straw cup right from the beginning and totally skipped the sippy cup. I consider this one of the brilliant decisions of my life. (It took her a month to learn to drink out of it. In the meantime, I would do that thing where you put your finger on the top of the straw and dribble the water in. She LOVED that.)

Around this same age, Elizabeth got WAY faster at nursing. She went from the hour long sessions down to fifteen minutes down to FIVE. So he might not be getting less milk, he might just be getting the same amount of milk much faster.

ACK! Stupid Blogger.. here goes again. Thanks girls. I emailed this to you too Jen, but he only drinks 2-3 oz of my milk every 3-4 hrs from a bottle too (more of formula), thus reinforcing my suspicion that they not only become more efficient but that your milk becomes more filling. (Someone needs to do a study on that!) On top of it, I get less milk pumping at the beginning of mu work week after 3 days of nursign than I do at the end.

Keeping in mind that I have no official proof or science to back me up on this, here are my 2 cents. :)
Bug also WAY shortened his mid-day feedings - like from 45 minutes to 5-10. He's still nursing 4x a day at 10 months, but the middle 2 feedings really are so fast they don't seem worth it.
We also had more luck with a straw cup than with sippies for him. He even took b/milk out of a strawcup the other day. He does love his water these days when it's hot. I have no idea if that's a "need," or just his personality.

And heating and shaking the b/milk was the only way I could get it mixed, too. I hate to see the "cream" wasted on the inside of a bag!

They are so much more efficient at nursing by this age that it doesn't take nearly as long.

And, thrush totally blows.

LB only nurses for 5-10 minutes at a time now.

Its always hot and we don't have central air, so I do give him water if he is sweating.
He loves the finger over the straw thing too.
I haven't tried a sippy. I just give him and regular cup and he gulps away.
