She's Baaaack

OK, so she was never really gone, but we are starting to see more and more PCOS related changes in my blood work again. Most notably, while my cholesterol levels are reflecting dietary changes by being annoyingly out of whack as opposed to "let's put you on medication" screwiness, my triglycerides have not obliged. They are beyond "semi-high" and trucking for the border. They're overachievers those triglycerides. I've done the diet and exercise thing and only ever seen "better" with it and not "optimal." I'm tired of trying so hard. At this point it's go on triglyceride lowering drugs or look to PCOS as the culprit and manage that first. Since I've also been having my "crashes" in the morning and my newly regular cycles seem to be lengthening, after visiting Endo today (have I mentioned that I love them there?) we've decided to go the way of Metformin again. We always knew this would probably be the case, and in a way I'm relieved, but oh man, here we go on the food roller coaster.

I had been annoyed lately by a stubborn 10+ pounds (I lost 2 on my diet fix) that wouldn't go away (another PCOS crapper), but now I'm thinking I should keep all the "skinny" clothes since last time I got down to high school weight from being so sick in the beginning on Met. That time I had the willpower to do it as one of my last resorts for getting pregnant and staying healthy. This time it's one of my last resorts so I don't travel the same tragic heart health road as family members before me. Wish me luck!

Good luck. That sounds like a big old pain. I am glad to hear you are going to go with a treatment you are familiar with. I wouldn't touch cholesterol lowering drugs (eg. statins -- don't know if that is what they prescribe for triglycerides) with a ten foot pole -- very scary stuff. At any rate, it sounds like you are great and very vigilant about taking care of health issues and that is awesome, although I hate that you *have* the issues to begin with.

p.s. my word verification is "ackpoo" which seems very fitting given some of your recent posts. tee hee. Oh and they ALWAYS need to go at naptime.

Tapering up (I was on the maxiumum dose) always helped me.

Thankfully, my cholesterol has never been bad.

Oh goodness, it sounds like you need to really saddle up for this. I too hope you can sort it out without statins, they're evil. So is dying of heart disease, I know. It is horrible having to make choices between sucky options. Wishing you the best of luck. x

PCOS STINKS! Although Metformin is a miracle drug for me. I lost 86 pounds while taking it.

Are you on it currently?

Good luck girl. Sometimes it feels like we just can't win.

I hope the adjustment to Met isn't as bad this time.

Women are not actually supposed to take statins.
For an interesting look at the actual studies and history of diet and drugs politicking, I recommend reading Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. It isn't about calories. It isn't a diet book. It's more like a history of the USDA, ADA,AHA,FDA and how certain advice wrongly came to be.
I'm sorry about redrafting the MET, but it really is probably your best course of action. Triglycerides are definitely an insulin thing and not about dietary fat.
