People often ask why I'm concerned about others knowing what sex the baby is. In short, I'm concerned about intense perpetuation of gender roles. Though Jen assures me that if you repeatedly ask for variety and not just pink or trucker's outfits, you shall receive.
This interesting blogger and mother put it pretty nicely. Living in Florida, I see a LOT of the whole princess/fairy thing, and quite frankly, I get very excited to see a little girl dressed up as something other. But I can admit that princess play figured a lot into my childhood. It just was not in any way a central sort of obsessive theme. I also role played as a jockey (with my stick horse), war (yes, we should grimace here), cops and robbers, store (I still find cash registers fun and enjoy being a cashier off and on!), school, super heroes, house, and one of my favorites - SPY.

Oh don't worry, annoying people will continue to perpetuate those gender roles after the baby is born. Unless of course you just dress them in gender neutral clothes for a few years, because honestly sometimes I still forget Jillian is a girl and call her a he.

I used to play Spy too! How cool is that. I also am very fascinated with a cash register ..all those buttons/bells/dings
Hubby & I were just talking yesterday about how much fun we had playing pretend as a child. Cops/Robbers, Cowboys/Indians, etc. I never played a generic princess, I wanted to be Princess Diana from the royal wedding. My Mom said I spent the entire summer of 1981 parading around the house with a curtain on my head as a veil.
You know, even when they are dressed in gender specific clothes, people misidentify your kid. I had my oldest in camouflage overalls adn someone said "What a cute girl." ...all because his hair was a touch long.
There will always be the people who buy pink when you are having a girl and blue when you are having a boy, regardless of the fact that you registered for yellow and green on purpose. It sucks, but I doubt the world will ever be void of them!
You could always tell them you are having a half boy half girl and hope they avoid the princess and sailor motifs all together! ;)
I dress W in 98% hand me downs- and some of those hand me downs are from girls and so sometimes people are all, "that IS a boy? right?"
We totally rock purple over here. And I also hope that W wants to do princess play as well as Spy play. I am down with anything. Except stuff with guns. oh lawd I am totally going to be the obnoxious, "no toy guns!" lady.
You have to say it A LOT, and even though you'll get your share of the Princess. (I mean, if it is a girl you will.) I specifically forbid anyone to get me anything pink (except my sister, who I knew wouldn't be able to resist) and still they got the pink. But my protests really did help.

I was totally NOT into girlie things when I was little. I had the pink this & that but I hated dolls and was so much more fascinated with games that Iactually had to wrap my MIND around.
I, too, loved playing with cash registers & money, shooting marbles (required a lot of strategy), and I even had a huge super-computer I called MAX, which was actually the hallway to my aunt's house.
Ah, the memories. Thanks for the reminder.
AWWWWW, remember playing spy????? I loved those little spiral notebooks...
